How To Prepare For Water Damage

water damage cleanup orlando, water damage orlando

People often don’t know when they are going to experience a water disaster. A pipe bursts or a roof leaks, but you never really see that coming. However, there are some unique situations where you might see water damage being something to prepare for. In places like Orlando, hurricane season is a time where a majority of residents have some kind of plan or preparation for potential water damage. Here are some ways to prepare yourself and your home for water damage.

Water damage can come in different forms. Sometimes it can come as a leak in the roof and sometimes it can come as a minor mudslide sneaking into your house through cracks in your doors. Whatever the form it takes, it is always wise to be prepared. During the middle of a storm there is no time to rummage around your shed to look for tools. So plan ahead. Let’s look at a few examples: If you have a mudslide in your home, you will need shovels. If you have leaks you will need buckets and towels. Other great items to have would be tarps, ponchos, and cleaning chemicals. You should also stock up on clean water before a big storm. There are countless uses and needs for clean water during the water damage cleanup.

Emergency Kit

Everyone should have some kind of emergency kit, whether you keep it in your car or in your home. Some items that  are essential have been placed in the list below :

  • Flashlights with batteries
  • 3 day supply of food
  • Fresh sets of clothing
  • Blankets
  • Propane camp stove
  • Knives
  • Rope
  • Duct tape

Of course, you don’t want to overpack when you are in an emergency, but it is paramount that you make sure you have all the essentials. One thing you should remember is that you might be out of power for a while, so if you don’t have a propane camp stove, make sure all the food you have on hand can be prepared without heat.

Move Valuables

While making sure you are going to be fed and clothed during a major storm is a really great and essential thing, making sure your items are safe is another thing that will save you emotional and physical pain later on. If you know a storm is coming, pack away valuables or things that could get damaged by water into plastic bins or onto the second story of your house. If you can move your items ahead of time your water damage will be minimal as well as your financial losses. You could also pack important items in your car in case you are planning to evacuate. Just make sure you have enough room for the essential food and hygiene needs you have as well.

You can never be too prepared when it comes to water damage cleanup, and one of the big parts of the cleanup is keeping yourself taken care of. If you have any other questions about dealing with water damage cleanup, contact Restoration 1 of Orlando today.
